France-Yemen relations refers to the current and historical bilateral relations between France and Yemen. Relations between the two countries are generally good. Yemen has an embassy in Georges Bizet street, Place des États-Unis, Paris. and France has its embassy in Sana'a.
France supported the unification of the country in 1990 and the preservation of its unity during the civil war in 1994. It played the role of mediator in the conflict over the Hanish Islands between Yemen and Eritrea. There is considerable convergence of views over regional issues. President Chirac met with President Saleh nine times between 1996 and 2006. Right after the election of President Sarkozy, President Saleh went to France from 25 through 27 June 2007, at which time the Yemeni president met with the French president, the Prime Minister, the defence minister and minister of the interior.[1]
The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Bernard Kouchner, went to Yemen on 21 February 2009 and was received by Foreign Affairs Minister Al-Qirbi and by President Saleh. This visit, which was the first time a French foreign affairs minister had travelled to Yemen since October 1993.[2]
France and Yemen maintain cultural and scientific cooperation in the areas of secondary and university education, in particular through the French Centre in Sana’a for Archaeology and Social Sciences (CEFAS), which signed an agreement with the University of Sana'a in 2006 to promote high-level cooperation in the fields of archaeological, historical, social science and humanities research.
